Paleontological Heritage: Bridging Scientific Research, Conservation, and Sustainable Development
Morocco stands as a true paradise for geologists, owing to its exceptional geological diversity, the remarkable quality and accessibility of its geological outcrops, and the richness of its fossil record. From the ancient Precambrian terrains of the Anti-Atlas to the Paleozoic basins, the Atlas Mountains, and the sedimentary successions of the Rif and Atlantic margins, the country offers an outstanding natural laboratory for investigating major stages in Earth history and the evolution of life.
Among Morocco's most remarkable natural assets, its paleontological heritage occupies a particularly important place. Fossiliferous localities across the country provide exceptional evidence of the evolution of life and of major biological, environmental, and geological changes through deep time. The study, protection, conservation, and responsible promotion of this heritage are therefore essential not only for advancing scientific knowledge, but also for raising public awareness and supporting sustainable geotourism and education.
It is within this framework that the 10th International Conference on Paleontological Heritage (ICPH10) will be held in Marrakech, Morocco, bringing together researchers, academics, students, heritage professionals, and other members of the international scientific community. The conference will provide a forum for presenting recent advances in paleontology and related geosciences (sedimentology, stratigraphy, Archeology...), and discussing approaches to the documentation, conservation, management, and valorization of paleontological heritage, and strengthening international scientific collaboration.
On behalf of the organizers, we are pleased to invite the scientific community to participate in this important event, which will combine academic sessions, scientific discussions, and opportunities to explore some of Morocco's classic and exceptionally well-exposed geological and paleontological localities. Through this combination of scientific exchange and field-based discovery, ICPH10 aims to contribute to a better understanding and sustainable preservation of paleontological heritage, while highlighting Morocco's outstanding contribution to the Earth sciences.
